TAP and the US Ambassador to Portugal celebrate announcement of new routes to Boston and New York

6 March, 2016

TAP Portugal celebrated at the official residence of the Ambassador of the United States of America to Portugal, the launch of its new direct daily flights from Lisbon to New York - John F. Kennedy International Airport and to Boston - Logan International Airport.

The company reasserted to Ambassador Robert A. Sherman, at this announcement, its commitment to the active promotion of Portugal in the USA as an attractive tourist destination, as well as the dissemination of the United States in the various markets where the company operates.

TAP will achieve this goal through promotional campaigns as well as other initiatives to promote Portugal in the United States and to provide an incentives programme for US visitors, encouraging them to choose Lisbon as the preferred stopover for their flights to and from Europe.

One such programme will be “Stopover”, which will allow passengers from the United States to visit Portugal, through a leisure stopover, before continuing their journey to their final destination in Europe. In this way, TAP can help the passengers to benefit from two trips in one, by offering the opportunity to visit Lisbon or other Portuguese cities. The company envisages that this programme will enable strong growth of tourism in Portugal, with an estimated impact on the national economy of around EUR 150 million over three years.

"It is with great appreciation and satisfaction that I highlight today the availability and support given to this initiative of TAP by the United States Embassy to Portugal, in the person of Ambassador Robert Sherman. I also emphasize, with optimism and enthusiasm, that TAP will expand its international service to the United States from this summer. We will then be flying to four destinations and offering US passengers the possibility of easy travel to Lisbon, the first point of entry in Europe, with access from its hub to the connectivity of the TAP network to other destinations," said Fernando Pinto, CEO of the company.

“The strengthening of the ties that bind us together is much easier when there are air connections bringing the two sides of the Atlantic closer together. The increase of connections will attract a greater number of US investors and entrepreneurs, students and tourists. I am delighted to celebrate here what I hope will be the first of several new routes created by TAP between Portugal and the United States," stated Robert A. Sherman, Ambassador of the United States of America to Portugal.

The new daily service to Boston begins on 11 June and the service to New York - JFK will be inaugurated on 1 July. Both routes will operate with the new Airbus A330 aircraft, which will be delivered to the Portuguese airline in June.

In addition to these two new destinations, TAP also flies to Miami and Newark, cities to which the company will increase its offer, flying daily from the summer of this year. TAP also operates bi-weekly direct flights between Porto and Newark. TAP will increase the overall number of weekly flights between Portugal and the USA to 30.
